What are Ballet Flats ?

Ballet flats are level shoes with little to no heel, typically mirroring that of the soft ballet shoe.

Where did Ballet Flats originate?

In the mid 18th century, Marie Camargo ushered in a new look for the typical ballerina. Besides wearing tights and short skirts, she also added a flat dance shoe instead of the typical heeled one, the ballet flat. They became the new trend amongst ballerines, with a soft sole and delicate fabric covering. It wasn’t until American designer Claire McCardell sought out to make the shoe an everyday type of shoe and added a hard sole to the design, marketing it in her 1941 collection. As the years went on, flats became more reinforced and durable, changing in shape and style.

What are the Types/Styles of Ballet Flats?

Ballet flats can range in shape and style. Some come with embellishments and ornaments on the toes. Others are very plain and simply designed. Some hug close to the shape of the foot, others retain the traditional ballerina shape. Some feature pointed toes, rounded toes, square toes, etc.

What Can You Pair Ballet Flats With?

Ballet flats are the type of shoe that can be worn with just about anything. They function in formal wear to business casual. They can be worn with a pair of distressed jeans, a preppy skirt, even a pair of bermuda shorts. It all depends on the style you’re going for.
