What is a Bootie?

A bootie is a type of ankle boot with the upper frame falling somewhere between the ankle and mid calf.

Where did the Bootie originate?

Depending on the area looked at in the world, the origin of the traditional “bootie” can vary. Native americans wore short boot-like moccasins that created the more traditional shape of the bootie-flat sole, completely covers the foot. The look of a modern day bootie can trace it’s roots to late 18th and early 19th century Europe. Closer to the end of the 1700’s and into the 1800’s, the need for a sturdier, more comfortable shoe became commonplace. France, Great Britain, even the newly established United States made use of the small lace-up leather boots. They were worn particularly by women as a way to retain modesty, what with their iron and steel skirts swinging around and exposing their ankles.

What are the Types/Styles?

Booties can have all sorts of designs, but they all tend to end right at the ankle. Some are made of leather, others suede. Some come with many embellishments like buttons, pendants, belts, buckles, and rhinestones. Others can be very simple and bare. Some booties are slip ons, whereas others come with either a zipper or laces. Some booties come with a very thin and tall stiletto heel, others can come with a wide chunky short heel.

What Can You Pair Booties With?

Booties go well with bottoms that accentuate the curves of the calf. That means that any pant leg from straight, to slim, to skinny would go great with a pair of booties. Due to the large number of different styles, the bootie can be modified to pair with anything from jeans, to dress pants. In way of skirts a longer, fuller style looks great with booties. Knee length to mid thigh is the best length for a bootie, but the right bootie can easily play up a mini or a pencil.
