Where did Artsy first originate?
-
Artsy is a collaboration of many different pieces stretching across many types of fashions. There is no set origin for “artsy”, but the basis of artsy-thinking outside the box and mixing/matching different pieces-did have it’s shining moment. In fashion history, this is defined as the 1920’s era. There was a move from the formal, practical, and simple, to the bright, shining, and flashy. Hemlines shortened, dresses hung instead of clung, and hats hugged snug to short cropped hair. This idea of pushing the envelope, trying out crazy new ideas is the very basis of artsy.

What makes me Artsy?
-
Someone who works the Artsy style typically never goes with the conventional. The artsy girl might wear a collared floral blouse and a knee-length twill pencil skirt, and pair them with an old leather satchel and some slouchy suede calf-high boots. They might also entertain a pair of dark-wash jeans, an oversized wool sweater-knitted by themselves-and a pair of white rubber doc martens that they’ve turned into their own personal experiment with sharpie markers. They might also be inclined to wear an outrageous mustard yellow sheath dress and top it with royal blue bracelets, earrings, clutch, and stiletto heels. You can never predict what an artsy person might where next

Where did Bohemian/Gypsy first originate?
-
The french actually coined the terms ‘bohemian’ to describe the often times ragged and wild appearances of the people who lived in a region of the Czech Republic called Bohemia. Calling the Bohemians ‘gypsies’ was more of a derogatory term in the beginning as they were often described in literature as poor, thieving, scheming, careless with money, and enchanted with music, song, and dance. Romany-as they prefer to be described-are traced back to India, where nomadic tribes called Roma traveled up from northern India into parts of Europe such as Spain, France, Germany, and parts of Russia. They also traveled into Morocco, Persia, and Egypt.

What makes me Bohemian/Gypsy?
-
In this style, one is more inclined to wea patterned, airy clothing. Baggy, light, loose fitting shirts, wide leg pants, low rise maxi skirts, lots of beaded necklaces, anklets, bracelets of all different sizes and shapes, long dangly earrings, pendants, belts, and scarves. A Bohemian/Gypsy style will give rise to more warmer, earthier colors arranged into intricate patterns meant to awe and allure. Soft reds, honeyed yellows, deep oranges, dark greens, cool blues, and dark browns are the colors one would typically be wearing, whether it was in a solid crochet tank, or a mandala-patterned pants. The style isn’t meant to look clean and put together, it’s supposed to look more like things were thrown on and worn comfortably. They stick to more flat sandals and soft leather boots. The look is finished off with a large fabric tote, a wide brimmed hat, and a fringe jacket or cardi.

Where did the Classic Style come from?
-
The original meaning of a ‘classic’ look is very different from today’s definition. The idea of classicism in fashion is originally traced back to ancient Greece and Rome. Their unique fashion incorporated long, simplistic lines down the body, framing across the shoulder and arms, and picturesque fabric drapery. Clean and uniform shapes were used for their form of dress. As much about effortless, fashion was about comfort and regality. Clothing was to frame, not conform. Eventually this characteristic traveled to the french, who took it and combined it with their own form of dress. And just like that, the style was handed down through the generations. As times and styles changed, people began referring to the idea of “classic” as simply clothing trends that never actually went out of style, because elements of the “classic” look were kept even as the styles and trends changed.

What makes me Classic?

In this style one is more inclined to professional wear. They incorporate items such as a loose blouse, a high waisted dress or top, ballet flats, straight-leg trousers, a safari, envelope, or clutch purse, and limited accessories. They utilize simple patterns or solid colors, even and straight tailoring along the arms and legs, and designer accessories in their clothing. They will wear a jacket over the shoulder like a cape, a solid color button up, and a loose pencil skirt. Someone is “classic” if they prefer to shop in higher end brands, look for professional type clothing styles, and seek comfort and balance in their apparel. They maintain the key element of classicism which is drapery. Clothing adorns the body, not confine it. No tight fitted tops or bottoms.
