The Beanie

What is a beanie?
A knit hat that slouches along the back of the skull and/or at the top.
Where did the beanie originate?
It is credited with being distinctly American and emerged out of the 1900’s as a cap worn to keep people’s hair out of their eyes. The term “beanie” is used loosely to define any type of headgear and emerged in the 1950’s from the cartoon “Beanie and Cecil” in which the boy of the cartoon wore a beanie with a propeller on it.
What are beanie types/styles?
Beanies can be tight or loose hanging depending on the fabric used and the shape of the cap. They can be any color, or pattern. Ones made of felt are typically close-fitting to the head while ones made of knit are loose, and sag at the back. Some can be very detailed and can have embellishments, such as knit flowers, or rhinestones. Others can be simple and plain.
What Can You Pair a beanie with?
Besides sportswear, beanies are great for casual wear. They can be played up with more formal clothing depending on the item. Slouchy clothes, a pair of jeans and a graphic tee can work with a beanie just as well as a skater skirt, a tight-fitted sweater, some knee-high socks and some suede boots.
