The Cardigan

What is a Cardigan?

A cardigan is an open sweater with a fastening down the front.

Where did the Cardigan originate?

They were said to be traced back to 17th century British Isles and France, worn by fisherman as a long, thick knitted sweater in Ireland. It became a popular trend in Ireland for workers subjected to the harsh weather outside.

What are the Types/Styles?

Cardigans vary both in style, type, fit, and shape. They can range from any type of fabric including cotton, wool, polyester, cashmere, etc. Cardigans can have anywhere from full length to ¾ sleeves. They can also have fastens that range from buttons, to zippers, to snaps. Cardigans Can have a long or short body stopping just below the waist, or extending past the hips.

What Can You Pair a Cardigan With?

Just a couple of examples! You are the one in control of what you wear a cardigan with. But for those of us who just want some insider tips, longer or thicker ones can be paired with thin long sleeved shirts or dress shirts.

Thinner, and shorter Cardigans look best when paired with sleeveless tops.
